Release July 27, 2006
Agri-Therm
Limited announces the formal signing of a partnership agreement with the
University of Western Ontario for a collaborative research project to
convert biomass into bio-oil using a mobile pyrolysis unit. The official
signing will be held at The Thompson Engineering Building, University
of Western Ontario on Friday July 28, 2006.
Pyrolysis is the "cooking" of dried and chopped agricultural
wastes in the absence of oxygen. Most of the molecules in the agricultural
waste "crack", producing gases, liquids and a solid residue.
Heat from the gases can be recycled to the pyrolysis unit. The liquids
can be further processed into products such as fuels, food additives and
pharmaceuticals. The solid residue can be used as fertilizer.
Agri-Therm and the Faculty of Engineering, University of Western Ontario,
designed and patented a unique fluid bed reactor. This allowed us to design
and build a mobile pyrolysis plant that addresses the unique issues associated
with agricultural products. Examples of agricultural wastes that can be
used for pyrolysis include sugar cane bagasse, raw sugar cane residues,
rice straw, tobacco, distillers grain, coffee husks and flax straw.
